The stadium was designed by Foster + Partners and Populous, with assistance from MANICA Architecture. The stadium has a seating capacity of 80,000 people. The Lusail Stadium, like the other stadiums planned for the 2022 World Cup, will be cooled using solar power and will have a zero carbon footprint.

On April 11, 2017, work on the Lusail Iconic Stadium began. The Stadium's construction was originally scheduled to be completed in 2020. It was originally scheduled to host three friendly matches until the 2022 World Cup, but due to the stadium's delayed completion, it will now host ten games, including the final.
